Divine Mercy Sunday Holy Hour

Sunday April 27, 2014

3:00pm at the Church

This year on Divine Mercy Sunday, our Holy Father Pope Francis will canonize two of his predecessors, Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII. Join us on this special Divine Mercy Sunday as we ask for God’s mercy and give him thanks for the giving the church two great saints to intercede for us. This bilingual service will be lead by our Associate Pastor, Fr. Fernando Lopez. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.

Background on Divine Mercy Sunday

In a decree dated August 3, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary announced that in order “to ensure that the faithful would observe this day (Divine Mercy Sunday) with intense devotion, the Supreme Pontiff himself established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence…so that the faithful might receive in great abundance the gift of the consolation of the Holy Spirit. In this way, they can foster a growing love for God and for their neighbor, and after they have obtained God’s pardon, they in turn might be persuaded to show a prompt pardon to their brothers and sisters.”The plenary indulgence is granted (under the usual conditions of a sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and a prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on Divine Mercy Sunday, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, recite the Our Father and the Creed, and also adding a devout prayer (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!)

Our Lord’s Mercy grants forgiveness of all sins and punishment on Feast of Divine Mercy, Mercy Sunday, mercy for even the most hardened sinners!

My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. Commentary: That is equivalent to the day of your baptism! The slate is wiped clean!

On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy (Diary 699)

On the Second Sunday of Easter of the Jubilee Year 2000, at the Mass for the Canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska, Pope John Paul II proclaimed to the world that “from now on throughout the Church” this Sunday will be called “Divine Mercy Sunday.”

Fr. Tom’s reassignmentReasignación El padre Tom

My sisters and brothers in Christ,
Mi hermanas y hermanos en Cristo,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce my reassignment to our Augustinian parish in Los Angeles, Our Mother of Good Counsel, as per my provincial’s and pastor’s request and recommendations. My start date there is January 21, 2012.

I am humbled by your years of prayers and support, and I am grateful to God and all of you for having been assigned here at St. Thomas. I will miss all of you, as you have a special place in my heart.

Me siento muy honrado por sus años de oraciones y apoyo, y estoy agradecido a Dios ya todos ustedes por haber sido asignado aquí en St. Thomas. Voy a extrañar a todos ustedes, ya que tienen un lugar especial en mi corazón.

I must also see this as God’s will for me. He blesses us with so many opportunities, and this new assignment will give me more experiences that I need in my priestly formation. Hence I see this as something very good for me, something that I will benefit from in the long run, even though it’s painful to have to leave this wonderful parish for now. (I pray that someday I will be blessed to be able to return here.)

I humbly ask that you keep me in your prayers, and I look forward to the time we have left together. Many of God’s best blessings to everyone here at St. Thomas, as I am gratefully,

In Christ and Augustine,

~ Fr, Wm. Tom Davis, O.S.A.

Our Lady Of Guadalupe Celebration Pictures

These are the great pictures Sharon Tremondt took. This day’s celebrations were by far the largest single day attended with over 1300 people sharing our faith and love of our Lady of Guadalupe. Thanks to all who attended. It was a blessing to share this beautiful day with all of you.

We begin our Virgin de Guadalupe procession to the Church.

As more pictures come in, I’ll go through them and add them here.
It was truly an awesome day. Thank you Lord!!!
