Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers
An extraordinary minister of Holy Communion in the Catholic Church is, under the Code of Canon Law, "an acolyte, or another of Christ's faithful deputed", in certain circumstances, to distribute Holy Communion. The term "extraordinary" distinguishes such a person from the ordinary (normal, regular) minister of Holy Communion, namely a bishop, priest or deacon.
Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers assist with the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ to the assembly during Mass. Training is provided.
Qualifications for the ministry include:
- Must be a practicing Catholic and fully initiated (Baptized, Confirmed and First Holy Communion)
- Registered parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas Church
- 16 years or older with a mature demeanor and a willingness to serve fellow parishioners
- Attend scheduled training and ongoing formation opportunities
